Sectors we serve
Deep roots in the industries
that matter most to our clients.
From Hampshire farmyards to equestrian businesses, probate estates to professional practices — Butler & Co has built genuine, long-standing expertise in the sectors where specialist knowledge makes a measurable difference.
Farming & Rural Businesses
A team that grew up
on the land.
We provide a dedicated service to farms, estates and rural industries — drawing on personal farming backgrounds as much as professional expertise. Lucy Butler and Fred Butler both grew up on the family farm in Bramdean. Julie Butler is one of the UK's leading authorities on agricultural and equine tax: editor of Farm Tax Brief since 2017 (published ten times a year), author of Tax Planning for Farm and Land Diversification (10th edition forthcoming 2025), co-author of Stanley: Taxation of Farmers and Landowners, and a regular lecturer to solicitors and accountants nationally on agriculture, probate and equine tax matters. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4 Farming Today.
Our specialist areas include IHT and APR/BPR planning, CGT on farm disposals, farm valuations, partnership agreements, farm diversification, and complex HMRC enquiry work — including consultancy for other accountants and solicitors.
"Butler & Co has been providing a very high level of service through a generation of its existence."— Client testimonial, executor of a complex multi-asset estate

Fred Butler specialises in structuring equine businesses for maximum tax efficiency; Lucy Butler brings personal equine experience to every client relationship. Owner Managed Businesses
Long-term relationships
built on trust.
We act for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies — and we measure our success in decades, not engagements. Clients including ND Marketing Ltd (with us since 1997, from sole trader through incorporation), The Alresford Linen Company Ltd, and Winebrand have all grown alongside us.
Andy Case FCCA is the named personal contact for many of our owner-managed clients, providing continuity of advice across accountancy and tax matters.
"Butler & Co have managed my accounts continuously since first setting up my business in 1997 — initially as sole trader, then incorporating in 2004. They are a highly professional local service provider, flexible, innovative, responsive and friendly to deal with."
Nick Duncan — ND Marketing Ltd
"Andy at Butler & Co always delivers and we congratulate him and his colleagues for being at the forefront of business life in Alresford for the last 20 years. Long may it continue."
Stephen Glaister — The Alresford Linen Company Ltd
Professional Practices
Accountants who advise
other accountants.
We act for a diverse group of professional practices — solicitors, accountants, dentists and doctors. Our depth of specialist knowledge in farming and equine tax means we also provide consultancy to other accountants and solicitors on farming diversification and bloodstock tax planning: a peer-to-peer advisory relationship that speaks for itself.
Probate, Trusts & Estates
One of very few accountancy practices
licensed for probate.
Butler & Co is one of very few accountancy practices in England and Wales licensed by the ICAEW to carry out non-contentious probate. Fred Butler holds a Certificate in Probate and Estate Administration alongside his ATT qualification and Master's Degree, and leads a dedicated enquiry team with a focus on IHT mitigation. Angela Evans is named by multiple clients for her handling of complex estate matters over relationships spanning more than twenty years.
